Naples, Pompeii & Sorrento
So sorry about the delay in pics from Rome but better late than never.=o) And those were just a third of what we actually have.
Here we go down toward the tip of the boot! Naples the place where pizza was invented, where can we go wrong? Dumb question. We had been warned about the pick-pockets in Italy and that they were the best. Our hostel should not be hard to find but going thru a group of people is not easiest thing to do with a 20-30 pound pack on your back. Mandi’s is the lighter one.=o) I get into Mandi’s pocket on her pack that is on her back to get out her little blue book with directions to the hostel so in daylight we leave the station and the only way to get to the opposite side of the plaza we have to go thru a walled in sidewalk. One side was construction and then on the other side a pole hip height between traffic and the pedestrian/bike sidewalk. We begin to walk thru and then in a moment there was a gypsy sidewalk sale and hundreds of people buying and selling junk or stolen stuff. The only way to get thru was to push and shove and no way to even get to the road to play in traffic (most likely safer). We finally get thru and to the hostel and I notice Mandi’s pocket on her pack is open. Mandi then looks and finds that her Kindle and journal from our trip are gone, grrrr. Really?!! Not a good way to start our adventure in a new town. The hostel owner was just as upset as we were, very sweet. Once we get past the moment the hostel owner gives us great directions to see their small city, how to get to the best pizza pace in Naples and best way to get to Pompey. We drop our stuff off and go to get something to eat and walk off some steam. We walked past the same sidewalk and their was not a gypsy or journal in sight. =o(. Naples is on the coast so it was nice and therapeutic to see and hear the water on the rocks. Again there were many people out running and walking we took as many pictures as possible but it was pizza time and we both needed it. De Michael’s is the pizza place and the only pizzas they have are cheese (that would not fly at home) but Oh My Goodness!!! We both ordered and we each got a medium pizza and ate it. I will never forget the perfection of that pizza so much so we went again before we left.=o) The next day was Pompey and on the train early because it is almost two hours to get there. I always thought Pompey was a small town but it was a small city! Mandi and I walked thru ruins and more ruins we had gelato and enjoyed the sun. Ahhhh, sun beautiful sun. We decided to try to go down to Sorrento to get the ferry to go to Capri but the cost of the ferry was 40 euro and we would only have an hour or to so we chose to not go and make our way back to Naples. Once we got there we decided to get PIZZA! It was still good but I could not eat the whole thing this time, hehehe I should not be able to eat even a half but when something is as good as this pizza you just have to eat it. Well, we will be off to Sicily the next day so we get back to the hostel and pack, again. If you have ever gone backpacking you would understand how old packing and unpacking gets. No matter how you try to plan your backpack and clothes for the week it seems you still have to get something on the bottom every time you open that silly bag. Our train did not leave till later in the afternoon so we were able to leave our bags at the hostel and look around Naples some more. So, we are leaving in the morning and there is a market on the road (guessing it is done every Saturday) and I forgot to say before but Naples is a very trashy city even though I saw several trashcans the people don’t seem to know what they are for. So, we are off to see if we can conquer Naples again, no pick pockets allowed, and we do an OK job but did not find exactly were we wanted to go but we passed the day. Now when we are going back for our packs some of that lovely trash a plastic bag to be exact gets tangled between my ankles and I do a face plant in front of TWO ROWS of Italian men and what to they do or say “OH, Oohh, oooohhh,” while I fall on my face. I am grateful Mandi was so far ahead of me because I would have pants her because of the natural tendency to reach in front of you. So only one of us was embarrassed. And again I hurt my knee, first in Spain when I fall down the stairs and now Italy but now I have a scar on each knee, great souvenirs.
