Marseilles and the candy cane chruch
Marseilles
Getting there is another story. Our train left on time but we have to remember we are still in Spain where everything is “manana.” Sometime during our trip our train stops for no specific reason and when we ask the answer is it is Spain what do you expect. So we ask the next obvious question when will we get started? The answer between 15 minutes to an hour and a half. OK, so we decide to play cards and eventually we get going again but we have now missed our transfer and will obviously domino to our last transfer. We arrive in Marseilles at night and it is cold, wet and we are hungry. Our hostel is called Vertigo, not a good start, but we get checked in and the receptionist looks at the computer then us and our packs and say “sorry,” again not good. We find out our room is on the third floor/attic and the first two flights are OK but the final flight is narrow and steep, fun=o0. We get to our room where two other girls are already there asleep. So we drop our bags make our beds and go back down to get dinner. We had good cheap pizza. Glad Mandi felt like sharing a heavy meal at that time would have not been good. So we walk around for a bit then go back and go to bed to be prepared for our only day in Marseilles. Guess what?! It is rainy and windy and Mandi want to go to the top of the only hill in town. =o/ OK, I am game but this will take time. We start walking up and we are reminding ourselves exercise is good, steps are good for bottoms and legs…right? You know a good idea in the morning may not fell like a good idea by mid morning. We make it even though I questioned myself for a bit. I honestly hate the cold and will not complain about Texas heat again. If I ever do everyone has the freedom to remind me of this blog. The church at the top of the hill was beautiful and worth the trip but still cold and wet. The church itself is made of marble red and white stripped. If for anything it was worth seeing a candy cane church. The floor was an intricate mosaic with very small pieces, a lot of work went into this building. Now…our trek down. Yes, cold and wet still but it is time for lunch Schwarma here we come. I love cheap lunches but I do miss hot coffee! I had hoped for a nice cup of hot coffee but no we had to go to Starbucks (yea, I know). Sad to say they know how to make HOT coffee apparently no one here likes their coffee hot only warm. After lunch and hot coffee we go to the next big church and then back to our hostel because we will be off to Florence tomorrow, hope our train is on time.
