Bruges - let there be chocolate!

So  did you know that Belgium is the capital of chocolate?  I always thought it was Switzerland... but according to the people in Belgium, the Swiss lie!  He he he - it is good chocolate, no denying that.  It is also friggin EXPENSIVE here.  I am very glad that Ana found us a reasonable hostel because otherwise we probably would not have been able to be here at all.  As you know by now, we're not much for museums, but there was a chocolate museum here... we couldn't resist!  We also thought that we would be able to see a life-sized statue of Obama in chocolate, but alas, it wasn't there.  We did see a chocolate sculpture of the Madonna and child (replica of the one by Michelangelo in one of the many churches that we haven't had a chance to track down yet).

Bruges is a small town, very cute, and OVERRUN with tourists.  Seriously, I heard more English accents here than I have anywhere else.  That may have had something to do with some kind of football (soccer) game.  Which reminds me - I have become European-ized.  There was a bunch of yelling and carrying on and my first thought was "someone's football club won" whereas Ana thought "someone's soccer team won".  Hehehe - I win.  We just took a walk today and found a couple of windmills, a decent place for lunch (we ordered off the "snack" menu and both had plenty to eat), plenty of great pictues, and niether of us got run over by a car or a bicylce.  Basically, tourists 2 days, locals 0 when it comes to knocking us over.

We have been here a month (officially) and I am totally loving it  With the possible exception of the pop music that seems to be everywhere in the hostels, the actual experience has been beyond what I could describe on here.  As for the pop music, well, let's just say I'm considering starting my own hostel chain of more metal-friendly ones.  After all, there are places with restaruants and bars in them, why not have a little Metallica or Scar Symmetry every now and then... or you know, 24/7 the way it should be.  In Sofia the englishmen we met asked us if Gangam Style was #1 in the US or "if you have some dignity" - I almost choked from laughing at that thought and we had to say, no, we have no dignity either.  Sigh.  Today as we were walking some teenagers came up from behind us singing some godawful American pop song... and in Hamburg they closed Beatlemania because no one knows who the Beatles were anymore... I have no hope for humanity... none.  And could someone please explain to me how skinny jeans can still sag??  HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!?!?  For seriously.... I'm so sad.  (Actually I do have some hope for humanity because shortly after that another group of teenagers came up from behind us and I could hear the metal thru their headphones - balance in all things, right?)

Anyway back to the rest, although I'm not really in the deep-thought mindset right now.  If you ever come to Bruges, remember to drink Brugse Zot - very very good beer.  The bartender in the hostel is all cheeky too - he said I can have 4 beers, then I have to buy him a beer before I could order another.  He he - imagine that, a cheeky bartender.  Although at 2.50 Euro a pop, one beer will do for me and then it's SLEEP time... haven't been sleeping too great the past few nights... unfamiliar pillows and the siren call of Game of Thrones (just started the books... bad juju when you need sleep and keep saying "just one more chapter") would be the immediate culprits... I may also be trying to get sick, but we're just gonna nip that one in the bud because I will NOT be sick going thru Europe.

So what you can take away from this post is that we are still having fun, we walk a lot and Ana still thinks I'm part cyborg, more hostels need to play metal, the swiss lie about their chocolate and the Lord is still keeping an eye on us - Praise Him (those of you who know can finish the rest).  Much love from across the pond - Mandi (aka Blonde)
